You may have seen a new word popping up in the York restaurant realm lately, that word is tapas. This year there are two restaurants in York that now offer tapas menus, one at El Serrano, and one at Codo 241,La Casa de Tapas. Not to be confused with topless restaurants…I promise you will never see THAT sort of review from me!
So, what are tapas? Well, lucky for you, I happen to be married to a man that went to school in Spain, and boy does he ever love tapas! Tapas are a sort of appetizer, but instead of eating them before your meal, you order several different tapas and eat them for your meal. They can be a cold dish (my husband’s favorite is called Ensalada Rusa, which is a kind of a potato salad type dish), or they can be a hot dish such as Albondigas, which are essentially meatballs. In my experience, they typically range in price from around $5-$10 each depending on the dish.
How should one eat Tapas? In my opinion, tapas are best when you eat them with a group. We like to go with at least one other couple, and order around 8 or 9 dishes to share. We have taken our son as well, and he loves being able to try all the different foods. Sometimes we love the dishes, and sometimes we don’t, but the fun is in trying something new with some good friends. The different dishes cannot help but spark conversation, and before you know it you are laughing over shared meatballs. On our grown-up only nights, we also like to order a pitcher of Sangria to share while we try our new foods.
Next time you are looking to a place to go with friends, somewhere new, something different, keep these new tapas bars in mind! Be adventurous, and have fun!
