Milkshakes & More at the PA Farm Show

Even though I’ve lived in the South Central PA area my whole life, last night was my first trip to the PA State Farm Show.   Of course I’ve grown up hearing about the farm show, how can you NOT live in this area and know about “farm show weather”?  At least this year wasn’t so bad for that, not like previous years.

We left around 4:30 and got there around 5.  We had a fairly easy time getting a spot in their off site parking and caught a bus to be shuttled in.  I wasn’t sure how I was going to like that part of it.  I’d much rather park right there and be there but they did a great job having buses coming and going non stop.  I’m sure there were times where there was more of a wait but overall I was very happy with it.

Looking back now I must say I recommend going in with a plan on what you want to see and where you want to go.  As I’m writing this I am now realizing there are a few things and the whole main hall that we missed.  I’m betting some of the things I wanted to see the most were in there.  If you are planning on going and you’ve never been there I would definitely print out the map from their website so you have some sort of idea on where you are going.  There is just so much there you really get sidetracked, especially if you have a little one (and even a not so little one) who is easily distracted by tractors and animals.

The animals, of course, were the boys’ favorite.  Cole was impressed by the cows and seeing them up close.  Both boys had a good time going through the bird section which included chickens, ducks and geese.

The boys did end up getting their milkshakes, that was at least one of the things we really wanted to try that we got to.  I was afraid the line would be too long but we got to it at just the right time.  If you go during the ‘slow time” they will make a mixed shake. I highly recommend it.

One of the things the boys were really looking forward to was seeing the ducks go down the slide.  Logan has watched it the past few years on the  website.  It is really cute, they have  baby ducks in a pool of water with a little slide and they keep going up it and sliding right down it.  Unfortunately we got there right as the last show of the night was starting and we couldn’t really get up front for the boys to see.  He did get to watch the just hatched baby chicks for awhile.
Overall we had a really good time, now we can just be better prepared for next year.   If you haven’t gone yet, you still have time.  The farm show is running until Saturday 1/15 at the Farm show building in Harrisburg.  Admission is free but parking is $10 which does include your shuttle to and from the building.
